Technical Skills and Abilities :

To obtain the esteemed title of Doctor of Medicine, a candidate must possess a wide range of abilities and skills in various domains. These include observation, communication, motor function, and behavioral and social skills.

Observation :

Through keen and independent observation, it is essential for the candidate to gather information within the field of medical sciences. This involves acquiring knowledge from demonstrations and experiential activities. The candidate must possess the auditory, visual, and somatic perception abilities to accurately obtain information from patients and various sources such as written documents, images, simulators, computer programs, and videos. Additionally, they must have the mental capacity to assimilate large volumes of technically detailed information presented in lectures, discussions, and clinical settings.

Communication :

The candidate must have proficient speaking, hearing, and observational skills to effectively gather information from patients. They should be able to describe changes in mood, activity, and posture, as well as comprehend nonverbal cues. Effective communication also encompasses reading and writing. The candidate must possess the ability to communicate sensitively and efficiently in English, both orally and in written form, with patients and the entire healthcare team. During emergency situations, clear and concise communication is crucial for the safe and effective care of patients.

Motor Skills::

The candidate must possess the necessary motor skills to perform diagnostic maneuvers, laboratory tests, and procedures. This includes palpation, percussion, auscultation, and conducting both comprehensive and organ-specific examinations, including mental status evaluations. The candidate should be capable of executing motor movements required to provide general and emergency medical care to patients. This includes performing emergency treatments such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management, defibrillation, administering intravenous medication, controlling bleeding, and performing basic obstetrical maneuvers. Quick and immediate reactions are necessary in such critical situations.

Behavioral and Social Attributes :

Given the ethical principles that govern the medical profession, it is imperative for a candidate to learn and understand these values and adhere to their guidelines. They must be able to establish honest, integral, non-discriminatory, self-sacrificing, and dedicated relationships with patients, staff, and colleagues. Developing mature, sensitive, and effective patient relationships is crucial. The candidate should possess the ability to recognize personal reactions and perspectives, integrating them appropriately into clinical decision-making. It is vital for candidates to provide non- judgmental care for individuals with diverse cultures, sexual orientations, or spiritual beliefs, irrespective of their own personal beliefs. Furthermore, the candidate's emotional well-being plays a significant role in utilizing their intellectual abilities, exercising good judgment, promptly fulfilling patient care responsibilities, and treating patients, families, and colleagues with courtesy, compassion, maturity, and respect for their dignity. These qualities, including compassion, integrity, concern for others, interpersonal skills, interest, and motivation, are all assessed during the admissions and education processes.
